Abstract
In response to the challenges of globalized competition and disruptive information technology innovations, using information technology to enhance the innovation capabilities of firms is an essential issue in management information system. Thus, we need to understand what factors affect the performance of the MIS department. Few studies in the field of MIS adopt organizational learning to examine the impact on MIS department performance. Even if there are studies using organizational learning, they take organizational learning as a single variable instead of separating it into exploratory learning and exploitative learning.
Therefore, this study creates an integrated model to explain how exploratory learning and exploitative learning affect MIS performance. Data was collected from 133 employees working in MIS department in Taiwan to test our hypothesis. The results show that exploratory learning improves the MIS innovation while exploitative learning enhances the MIS performance. Furthermore, we found that exploitative learning may impede the impact of exploratory learning on innovation. In sum, the result of this study can provide practitioners as well as academics the refreshing view regarding the relationship between organizational learning and MIS department performance.
