Abstract
The emerging of aging, aged and super-aged societies and the rapid growth of elderly population in past decades have brought about the conceptualization of long-term care, aging-at-home and aging-in-place in recent years. The establishment of home safety has become the most important element in order to practice aging-at-home and aging-in-place for the elderlies. A friendly environment is the primary prerequisite to home safety, and the realization of an elderly-friendly environment can improve the feasibility and safety of aging-in-place for the golden aged.
This research aims to develop the Heath, Safety, Living Model (HSLM) and to build a home safety checklist for both elderly and handicapped people based on HSLM. This study utilizes Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), which is classified into six phases as follows: Requirements, Design, Development, Testing, Users’ Response and Maintenance. The loop design of this model enables the modification of checklist based on users’ responses and further meets the expectation and requirement from users.
Four modifications have been conducted on the home safety checklist in order to fulfill users’ various needs. This checklist facilitates the enhancement on users’ daily environment and reduces dangers occurred owing to unfamiliarity. According to this research, elderlies in Taiwan will face potential dangers in daily life due to the lack of elements contributing to building an elderly-friendly environment.
Aging is an inevitable trend and actions taken on home safety have become imperative. Promoting a healthy and safe home environment can help users live their lives to the fullest. Furthermore, number of accidental injuries due to unfamiliarity of surroundings will reduce to the minimum.
