Abstract |
The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive biology of the giant clams Tridacna maxima and Tridacna noae. Field monitoring in the changes of egg diameter was conducted in Kenting and Donsha during the period of March 2013 - July 2014. The spawning peak of T. maxima was from May to August in Kenting, and March to June in Dongsha. In T. noae, it was through May to July in Kenting, and April to June in Dongsha. Artificial fertilization was successfully conducted in T. maxima, T. noae and the hybrid. However, the death of hybrids occurred two days after fertilization. And, there was no significant difference in shell length between the larvae of T. maxima and T. noae before settlement. The growth of 3-month old juveniles was 0.06 mm/day in Penghu and 0.19 mm/day in Linbian. Both species grew faster in higher temperature (27~29℃) than the lower one (24℃). And, there was no significant difference in slopes of the length-weight regression between the two species. Besides, it was found that the standardized shell-base width and scute width were greater in T. maxima than that of T. noae. As a whole, the present study also indicates that T. maxima and T. noae are different species. |
