本研究以Krugman的新經濟地理模型為主軸，並參考Murata and Thisse的研究步驟，加入了都市成本的概念，並對模型做了些許的改變。本文發現：(1)由於各區域間的通勤成本不一定相同，則對稱均衡不一定能夠使經濟體系的商品多樣化程度達到極大。當某區域致力於區域內的交通運輸建設，以降低人民的通勤成本時，聚集效果產生的都市成本亦不見得會對經濟體系帶來負面影響。(2)在對稱均衡之下，不論在未改善區域內運輸系統前的通勤成本為何，都不影響對稱均衡的穩定，對稱均衡的穩定主要受到各運輸系統勞動投入所帶來的效率改善所影響。(3)在經濟體系為聚集均衡之下，只要兩地的運輸成本夠大，則聚集均衡會是穩定的；而當運輸成本較小時，則當集中區域的通勤成本夠小，聚集均衡恆為穩定均衡。在高運輸成本下，居民消費其他區域商品的成本也會因為運費高而變的很大，如果聚集在單一區域則可以享受到較便宜且多樣化的商品，聚集均衡會為穩定。
