Abstract
Elizabeth Gaskell is a notable Victorian novelist, philanthropist and biographer. Her conditions-of-England novels Mary Barton and North and South that draw on the condition of the working classes have been very influential at her time. However, being a caring mother and a minister’s wife herself, Mrs. Gaskell also paid great concerns with educational issues in her works. Her short stories reveal her criticism of the Victorian educational system. She advocates for free education for all. The present thesis explores Mrs. Gaskell’s presentations of social problems such as prostitution, witchhunts, and juvenile delinquency at her time and her employment of education as their solution. It explores how Mrs. Gaskell utilizes her writing, especially periodical short stories, to change social values and to advocate reforms. Chapter 1 discusses Mrs. Gaskell’s preoccupation with the issue of fallen women in Victorian society and her belief in education and profession as the best solutions to this problem, taking the examples of Ruth, “Lizzie Leigh,” “The Old Nurse’s Story,” and “The Poor Clare.” Chapter 2 examines Mrs. Gaskell’s concerns with social victims such as the “psychotics” in the terms of bewitchment in her “The Poor Clare,” “Lois the Witch,” and the mentally challenged in “The Well of Pen-Morfa,” and “Half a Life-Time Ago” and her suggestion of using scientific education to help them. Chapter 3 focuses on Mrs. Gaskell’s interests in certain social outcasts such as illegitimate children, juvenile delinquents and criminals’ children’s miseries and her suggestion to solve their problem through education in her works A Dark Night’s Work, My Lady Ludlow, “Right at Last,” “The Heart of John Middleton.”
