羅傑‧奎爾特(Roger Quilter, 1877-1953)於一九O七年創寫《七首伊麗莎白時期抒情詩歌》(Seven Elizabethan Lyrics, 1907),在二十世紀英文作曲家中,奎爾特是第一位試著以小規模且精緻的藝術歌曲作為創作立基之人。此套歌曲集共七首樂曲,分別為第一曲〈請你別再流淚〉、第二曲〈我生命中的歡喜〉、第三曲〈粉紅玫瑰〉、第四曲〈無情的牧羊女〉、第五曲〈棕膚是我的愛〉、第六曲〈在噴泉旁〉以及第七曲〈歡樂滿屋〉。本文主要探討此套歌曲集之樂曲連貫性,並將研究集中於透過不同的動機發展靈活運用在每首樂曲。
此套歌曲集在詩作的選用上,主要以「不同面向之愛」的肅穆古詩為題材,詩作內容包括了憐惜之愛、雀躍之愛、疑惑之愛、離棄之愛、擁護之愛以及陷於兩難之愛,而詩詞來源皆取自於伊麗莎白時期詩人的詩作。此套歌曲集為了達到曲集之連貫性,使用獨特的五個動機及其變形將之串連,並以輪流方式出現於不同樂曲,成為主要串連全曲之重要脈絡。事實上,羅傑‧奎爾特為英文藝術歌曲開創了新的轉折點,也成為影響後期作曲家之重要推手。
Abstract
The song cycle of the Seven Elizabethan Lyrics (1907) was written by Roger Quilter (1877-1953), who was an important English composer and wrote a small and exquisite artistic songs in the Twentieth Century. The cycle contains seven songs: “Weep you no More,” “My Life’s Delight,” “Damask Roses,” “The Faithless Shepherdess,” “Brown is my Love,” “By a Fountainside,” and “Fair House of Joy”. The purpose of the study is to examine the musical continuity of the songs in the cycle. The research focuses on motivic usage within each songs.
The selection of poems in the cycle concentrate on the various aspects of love including love of pity, of joy, of doubt, of abandonment, of support, and of dilemma, which were taken from poems by the works of the several poets in the Elizabethan era. In order to achieve the musical continuity, there are five distinctive motives are employed in the whole cycle, in which they take turns in one or another songs within the cycle. Roger Quilter, indeed, initiated a new turning point for English art songs and became a modal composer for the next generation.
