Abstract
Abstract
From the mid-nineteenth century to the twentieth century, the nature writings of Henry David Thoreau, John Muir to Aldo Leopold have shared a common subject: environmental ethics. Broadly speaking, environmental ethics emphasizes the protection of natural environment, wise uses of natural resources, and the harmonious relationship between humankind and nature. From the perspective of environmental ethics, this thesis explores the idea of environmental conservation and ecological conscience in the works of Thoreau, Muir, and Leopold. This thesis contains five chapters. Chapter One is the general introduction of the whole book. Chapter Two focuses on Thoreau’s Walden, exploring how Thoreau expresses his idea of environmental conservation and how he advocates the utilization of natural resources in a sustainable way. Chapter Three centers on John Muir’s Our National Parks, it discusses how Muir promotes the concept of creating national parks and how he preaches the idea of preservation to maintain the environmental sustainability of forest development. Chapter Four focuses on Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, exploring how Leopold extends the notion of environmental ethics to the ethics of the land and how he defines the land ethics. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the book.
