Abstract
This MBA research analyses China’s economic involvement in Thailand from 2010 till 2020. During the same period however, China successfully blocked and took over Taiwan’s economic engagement in Thailand. By using the Dependency theory as an analytical framework, that is, using terms such as the Core-Periphery economic relationship between China and Thailand – this investigation will examine how these relationships have evolved during the last decade. For example, I found that during Thailand’s period of political disturbance, there has been trade and FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) increase from China. Although trade activities were rapidly growing, trade deficit with China about eight times increased from 2010 to 2019. After the 2014 military junta, Chinese investment surpassed Taiwan investment in the manufacturing industry. Income inequality increased, therefore accentuating the negative effect Dependency brings to a Periphery country. To phrase it differently, 53 percent national income belongs to the elite class. The case study of this thesis is the construction of a high-speed railway project, a contract awarded by the Thai Government to a Chinese multinational corporation, because it offered the required finances, technology and know-how-to. In other words, an excellent case to demonstrate how Dependency operates. I argue that People’s Republic of China is now dominating (Core) Thailand (Periphery) affairs and establishing a long-term presence in this South-East Asian country – by using trade, FDI and infrastructure development projects. Nonetheless, during the last decade, it has also displaced Taiwan’s presence in Thailand.
