Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate the theoretical and practical influence of the rising of Taiwanese National Identity on the new immigrants’ acculturation, concentrating on the Vietnamese spouses. As the result of the emerging wave of national identity and Taiwanese consciousness, the Taiwanese political and public discourses’ announcement of being/pursuing a multicultural society was the answer to satisfy the political demand. It also has a significant influence on the new immigrants, encouraging society, cherishing and respecting the cultural differences between distinctive ethnocultural groups within the civic framework of the larger community. By tracking down the relationship between the Vietnamese spouses’ acculturation and the Taiwanese national identity, this thesis argues that the vestige of assimilation policies and stereotypes of public spheres remains despite the efforts toward multiculturalism. However, a recent dramatic increase of well-educated spouses may draw a bright prospect for the new immigrant’s dynamic participation in the political and social field.
