Among viola repertoire, Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Potpourri Op. 94 for Viola and Orchestra is both brilliant and beautiful. It is excellent for violists of different levels to study and perform. One may find the performance techniques of this piece easy and straight forward at the first glance. However, without mastering different techniques in the music, it will be impossible to achieve the best musical effect.
The aim of this study is to discuss techniques and interpretation of the viola solo part of Hummel’s Potpourri Op.94 for Viola and Orchestra. It consists of three chapters and an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter introduces Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s life, musical styles, and the compositional techniques of the Potpourri Op. 94 for Viola and Orchestra. The second chapter discusses the musical interpretation of the piece. The third chapter explores the practice methods for various technical challenges within the Potpourri Op.94 for Viola and Orchestra.
