Abstract
Bandura’s social learning theory posits that the interaction among individual cognition, behavior and environment will affect the learning process. In social learning theory, people can learn by observing the behavior of model named observational learning which includes four stages: attention, retention, motor reproduce and motivation, through which people can internalize model performance as self-awareness into a complete learning process.
The advancement of gesture-based technology has not only changed human-computer interaction, but learning in a new way. Current gesture-based learning is still under development, much research focuses on motivation and learning performance such as memory. This study intended to explore the effect of different observational model (video model/live model) and different operation (observe by peer/operate oneself) on yoga learning in gesture-based environment.
In this study, a between-subject experiment with two factors (observational model/demonstration) was conducted in which 80 learners were randomly assigned into four groups. The results show that both factors have no significant effect on learning performance, but there is an interaction between the factors. Further analysis found that observing live model at first then with demonstration (observe by peer) have better learning performance than without demonstration (operate oneself). This finding could be helpful for future research in gesture-based environment and yoga learning.
