Abstract
In this study, we surveyed 675 parents in Kaohsiung city about the status of their young children’s information communication technology use and examined parental attitudes toward this status, as well as the relationship between socio-economic status and children’s ICT use. The results found that about half of the parents think the most appropriate age for young children to access ICT (e.g., computers and smartphones) is after six years old, but actually, more than 80% of their children had ICT experience before six years old. It shows that, for parents, there is a contradiction between the ideal and the real age of children’s ICT use. In addition, the results of Rasch model analysis showed that parents think “cognitive learning” is the most positive impact of children’s ICT use, and the "addiction and over-reliance" is the negative impact that parents are most worried about. Finally, according to the study results, we propose recommendations for future research.
