The study on the development of essential oil industries in Taiwan and the regulations of essential oil industries is just at the beginning stage.|
In this study, field interviews and literature review were employed to discuss the information asymmetry commonly found in essential oil industries, and certification and education were presented as two possible ways to solve the problem. The data gathered as well as those collected from in-depth interviews and literature review were thus used to get a clearer picture of the development of the essential oil industries in Taiwan as well as the related regulations
The following suggestions were made concerning regulations. (A) Proper rules about labeling essential oil should be made. (B) The government should help farmers by offering them guidance in cultivating plants, finding essential oil companies to cooperate with them and granting them subsidies for testing and seeking regulations. (C) Essential oil products defined as cosmetics and general merchandise should be examined more strictly. (D) The database concerning the essential oil ingredients of plants native to Taiwan as well as the standards of examination should be set up.
In terms of education, the suggestions were made as follows: (A) Licenses should be issued to meet the need for experts in the essential oil industries so as to raise their professional image. (B) The online knowledge bank should be set up to offer correct information. (C) Essential oil departments or graduate school should be established or at least some essential-oil-related courses should be offered. (D) Researchers and scholars should be encouraged to attend international seminars related to essential oil industries or to visit countries where the essential oil industries have fully developed. (E) Aesthetics education and the cultural and creative industries could be united to form an essential oil museum or a fragrance museum to offer people knowledge of the essential oil and chances to experience different fragrances. (F) Environment education and food education could be combined. All educational units, ranging from elementary schools to universities, should be encouraged to offer activities for students to experience nature to enrich their knowledge about plants.
