The key aspect being stressed is the capacity for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program to make alliances. The cases of South Korea and Japan are taken because they are at the core of today’s East China Sea rising tensions with the growing threat of China. The balance of power is changing between China and the other countries surrounding its coasts and being allied with the United States. Adopting a fifth generation fighter as the F-35 for South Korea and Japan is a strategic decision to enhance their alliance with the United States, which at the same time is aiming to concentrate its forces in the region and maintain a technologic advantage on China’s weapons. On the other side, China is developing its military forces impressively fast using unexpected ways to reach a sufficient deterrence force that will be able to be a major player in the region and ensure the security of its frontiers. To face the rising threat of China, its neighbors are engaging in an arms race to protect their own interests. The JSF program is the essential and invisible tie that would form an alliance around the United States to keep the balance of power on their advantage. China Sea disputes engaging the first military powers in the world allow the coming back of the realistic approach which has disappeared after Cold War.
