在瓜地馬拉,Goldcorp已經和Montana Exploradora de Guatemala S.A.
Abstract
Nowadays companies increasingly adopt corporate social responsibility as part of its business strategy, generally those strategies improve the sustainable development not only of the business but also within the county that the business is developed. The contributions from the CSR are focusing on taking care of the environment and society, as well as providing economic benefits, but there are certain industries that has been questioned about the transparent responsibility of its operations, the mining industry is one of them. The debate about the mining industry relies whether mining provides an economically, environmental and socially sustainable model development. While the mining industry generate benefits to societies, the industry has detrimental impact on affected communities.
Goldcorp Inc, one of the most important gold corporations in America. In Guatemala Goldcorp has mining operations through Montana Exploradora de Guatemala S.A. This company started the construction of the Marlin Mine in San Marcos Guatemala on May 2004, since that date the Marlin Mine in Guatemala has been the object of local conflict in the country.
On 2010 in order to protect the health, environment and human rights of local indigenous communities, the Inter-American Commission of Human rights, calling on the Guatemala government to suspend operations at Marlin Mine.
This is an evaluation of the CSR of Montana Exploradora de Guatemala through the three pillars of the sustainable development; economic, social and environmental sustainability. This study has four main purposes: identify the contributions from the Marlin Mine to the sustainable development of San Marcos, Guatemala, describe the CSR, identify from different arguments the contribution from the mine to the sustainable development of the country, and make suggestions to the CSR to increase the sustainable development in Guatemala.
