Abstract
This thesis focuses on Malaysia’s turbulent status during decolonization in Tash Aw’s The Harmony Silk Factory and Indonesia’s chaotic situation after independence in Tash Aw’s Map of the Invisible World. I want to show by writing this thesis that the cultural memory of being colonized still influences the present decolonized profoundly. I foreground that though nations are imagined communities as Benedict Anderson has suggested, only by actively imagining after independence can a nation go on with its authenticity. Divided into three chapters, this thesis aims to discuss the remaining impact of colonialism after independence, cultural memory’s effect on the colonized, and what problems await the decolonized after decolonization. I strengthen my viewpoint of the world being Eurocentric by exploring the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized in Map of the Invisible World. In addition, I investigate the cultural memory of the colonized in The Harmony Silk Factory and the possibility of their nationalism affected by such memory of oppression. I will use these two novels to prove that there is even diversity within the seemingly contrastive bipolar of the white and nonwhite. As long as the decolonized are ready to accept the differences within themselves and their colonial past, they will find solutions for present predicament and the possible paths toward the future.
