Abstract
Speculative fiction allows its readers to consider alternate timeframes and histories and examine their own environments and culture via comparison and absence, and therefore ultimately functions as a means for participants to speculate about themselves and the environments which they inhabit. Despite steampunk’s relatively short existence as an official genre, it has expanded from a literary genre into a subculture, with its influence now visible across a variety of mediums. As its popularity and dimensions have increased, so has the variety in its collective body of work, resulting in discourse of what is considered as steampunk. Though steampunk has traditionally been associated with retrofuturism and a Victorian-inspired aesthetic, these aspects have been disputed and challenged due to the increased ambiguities within the genre. Steampunk, already a genre of opposites and amalgamations, has become diverse enough that its own work can be simultaneously self-contradicting and self-resolving, necessitating a discussion of the ambiguities of which steampunk is comprised, rather than attempting to come to a consensus. This thesis is an exploration of the spaces that exist within steampunk—focusing on individuality, materiality, technicity, and narrativity, respectively—to examine why the attempt to define the genre has proved so complex an undertaking, the implications of bringing seemingly contradictory inspirations together, and what this may indicate for steampunk’s future. Through a genealogical perspective, dialogue will be drawn from extant examples within and around steampunk as a means to consider its trajectory and the significance of bricolage. Although the discrepancies that are reconciled in steampunk have resulted in the complications of its categorization, the genre’s penchant for adaptability in the face of fragmentation are simultaneously what sustains its integrity and its fragility.
