中國大陸的對外直接投資，從1980年代的遠遠落後至2015年名列前茅，躍升為僅次於美國的全球第二大對外投資國，有著戲劇性的轉變。其對外直接投資淨額第一次名列全球第二，並且首次超過同時期吸引外資（Inward FDI）的淨額，實現雙向直接投資項的第一次資本淨輸出。因此就現實面來說，實在有必要探討中國大陸對外投資的動機和模式。
本文以統計數據為根據，研究中國大陸對外投資及其發展特徵。探討中國大陸企業對外直接投資的投資動機與進入模式（entry mode）、區位選擇和產業結構分布等的關係。發現中國大陸對外直接投資動機影響著期進入模式如產業分布及區位特徵等，中國大陸對外直接的動機由資源尋求型逐漸轉為策略資產尋求型和市場尋求型，投資動機的差異性影響著產業結構分布和地理區位，甚至中國大陸對外直接投資在各洲或各個國家或地區都有其進入模式的特殊性。

China's Foreign Direct Investment has come a long way and dramatically evolved from its relative insignificance in the 1980s to a top position in 2015 as the world second largest foreign investor, just behind the United States of America.
For the first time its net Foreign Direct Investment is ranked as the world’s second, concomitantly exceeding the net amount of its inward foreign direct investment, achieving by this token the net capital output of a two-way direct investment. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the motives and patterns of China's foreign investment.
The present research investigates the development of Chinese foreign investment, based on the analysis of statistical data. It explores the investment motives, entry mode and location selection of Chinese companies and their impact on the economic growth of Mainland China. Our analysis of Chinese Direct Investment found out that the motives of Chinese Direct Investment have progressively shifted from the need for natural resources to the search for market and strategic resources. This discrepancy in the motives of investment has a strong impact on the distribution of Chinese industrial structure and its geographical location. Furthermore, the entry mode of Chinese direct investment is specific to the region, state or country of its location.
