Abstract
Taixi is one of the oyster farming areas in Taiwan. To increase the commercial value of cultured oyster, the Mariculture Research Center of Fisheries Research Institute has conducted breeding programs on golden oyster years ago. In this study, the differences between golden oyster and general cultured oyster were investigated through species identification and growth comparison. The research was divided into (i) species identification of golden oyster, (ii) estimation the occurrence of golden oyster in the field, and (iii) comparing the growth and survival between golden oyster (G) and general cultured oyster (W). Based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequence data, golden oyster and general cultured oyster both were Crassostrea angulata. The percentages of golden oyster in Taixi, Qigu, and Kinmen were insignificantly different (p>0.05), i.e., 9.7±5.2%, 9.5±5.4%, and 8.4±5.8%, respectively. The growth experiments were conducted in two ponds (P1、P2) located in Taixi during the period from August 2017 to April 2018. Monthly survival rates of P1G, P1W, P2G, and P2W were all above 95%. And, overall survival rates of them were 84.0%, 86.7%, 93.3%, and 95.0%, respectively. No significant difference was found among the four groups in monthly or overall survival rates (p>0.05). Water quality, including pH, salinity, DO and chlorophyll a, was different between P1 and P2 which might result in differential growth in experimental oysters. In other words, golden and general cultured oysters in the same pond had a similar growth trend. General speaking, the increments of average shell length, shell area and volume of golden oyster were smaller than the general one except for tissue weight. The inferior growth of golden oyster may link to genes determining shell color. Moreover, sampling bias through a small stock of bred parents and offspring can not be ruled out neither.
