中文摘要
為瞭解企業專利佈局與企業策略及市場地位之間的關聯,本研究選用無線通訊產業作為研究目標,利用16大企業截至2017年底USPTO資料庫專利類別H04(電子通訊)下17類專利數量建立個別企業專利組合後,透過主成分分析(PCA)方法及資料視覺化效果,觀察出市場後進廠商不論是為競爭市場地位或是企業內部轉型(本文例子為Intel),皆的確有模仿領導廠商專利佈局的行為;而未有模仿行為之追隨者屬本業核心並非屬於此領域因此不採取模仿,反而採取另一種行為模式,即為所屬相同領域的企業間會有相同的佈局行為,不論是互相模仿或是共同擬定產業發展策略,皆相當明顯的有著雷同的專利發展策略。此外,由企業不同樣本期間內專利佈局的移動軌跡亦可觀察出3G到4G及4G到5G的關鍵發展技術差異。
本研究對市場諸多對象皆能有所貢獻,其一可協助大型追隨廠商擬定專利發展策略,其二可協助小型新創企業鎖定發展方向,有助受到大型企業青睞得到後續投資或尋求購併機會,其三可協助市場投資人鎖定標的建立組合,提前佈局即將到來之5G時代。
Abstract
To understand the relationship between corporate strategy, market position and corporate patents composition, this study selected the wireless communications industry as the research target. We used the numbers of 16 companies’ patents under patent category H04(Electric Communication Technique) in USPTO database to build individual company’s patent portfolio. After processing through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Method and Data Visualization. We can observe an obvious phenomenon that the market's latecomers whether they are competing for market position or executing the business transformation, there is indeed a behavior that mimics the patent portfolio of leading companies. And the reason that followers who did not imitate is their company’s core products are not located at the same field as the leading companies. However, they have adopted another behavioral model. That is, companies in the same field have the same behavior on patent portfolio. Whether they imitated each other or jointly formulated industrial development strategies, having evidently same behavior on building patent portfolio. In addition, the essence and the difference of the technology development between 3G to 4G and 4G to 5G can also be observed from the moving tracks of patent portfolio in different sample periods.
This study contributes to many individuals. First, it can assist large-scale manufacturers in drawing up patent development strategies. Second, it can help small-scale companies or startups to lock in the development direction to attract large companies for follow-up investment or acquisition opportunities. Third, assisting market investors locking down investment targets to establish a portfolio, preparing ahead for the coming 5G era.
