本研究關注女性背包客的旅行經驗。透過分析女性主體的旅行經驗，以及對風險的想像與應對，探討背包旅行賦權﹝empower﹞女性行動者，並改變女性長期背負受害者的社會想像之可能性。
本研究以女性主義中「被害女性」與「自主女體」的辯論，以及社會建構視角，探討性別化的旅行風險。女性背包客身為生理女性，又具有背包客認同，因而可能身處「理想背包客的想像」與「女性易受害的想像」兩種力量的拉扯之中。本研究描繪行動者面對旅行風險時，上述兩力拉扯如何形塑行動者的行為和自我認知，而背包客社群和社會又如何回應行動者或產生變化。研究以深度訪談法和參與式觀察進行，包含與33位獨自進行國外旅行的台灣籍女性背包客、2位非核心受訪者進行的深度訪談，以及參與了6場由女性旅行達人主講的旅行分享會，此外筆者亦隻身前往澳洲進行23天的背包旅行田野觀察。
　　本研究發現，女性背包客的實踐鬆動了背包客的陽剛文化，重新定義或歸類「冒險」、「獨立」等理想背包客的核心特質，使之出現去陽剛化的現象。其次，背包旅行賦權女性，追求與理想背包客想像一致的特質：自主、自由、獨立，行動者挑戰了社會既有的性別結構，改變與家庭成員或伴侶的權力關係。第三，本研究之成果呼應了學者Emily Falconer（2011）的研究發現，女性被害的社會想像與對理想自主的追求，兩力相互拉扯形塑了女性背包客的旅行選擇。第四，女性被害的社會想像有其事實基礎，雖然女性背包客的旅行經驗挑戰了旅遊當地與其所處社會固有的性別框架，女性背包客發展的風險感知與自保策略仍顯示，此行動對於女性較易受害的社會想像和處境改變有限。

Through the narratives of responses toward risks to female backpackers from Taiwan, This thesis identifies how women are empowered by backpacking. It also explores the possibility of change toward female victimization in the social imagination.
This thesis focuses on the genderization of risks in traveling. The discussion is based on the feminist debates between “woman as a victim” and “woman as a subjective Individual,” and on social constructivist perspectives. By analyzing the internal tensions female backpackers experienced between the imagination of the ideal backpacker and a vulnerable woman, this thesis explains how the tensions form female backpackers’ decisions, behaviors and identities, and how the communities and societies respond to these women or being changed by them. In-depth interviews and participant observations are the main methods for collecting this material. The in-depth interviews include narratives of 33 Taiwanese female backpackers who have solo backpacking experience abroad, and opinions of 2 other participants. In addition, the researcher attended 6 different speeches presented by female experts in backpacking, and also spent 23 days backpacking abroad in Australia.
This thesis contends that the practices of female backpacking break the masculine culture of backpacking through redefining the main characteristics of the ideal backpacker, such as risk-taking, adventure and independence. Secondly, backpacking empowers women, as female backpackers challenge the traditional gender structure and change the power relationship between themselves and their family members or their partners. Thirdly, the results support Emily Falconer’s (2001) research. According to Falconer, the tension caused by the conflict between social imagination of female victimization and the desire for ideal subjectivity form female backpackers’ decision making while traveling. Lastly, although the traditional gender structure is challenged by female backpackers’ experiences, violence toward women remains a reality. The development of risk perception and the self-protection strategy of female backpackers indicate that the change for social imagination of female victimization is still limited.
