Abstract
The notion of calling was originally derived from religion realm, but in recent years, the studies focused more on secular perspective of calling. Rather than concentrating on calling’s religious origin, researchers nowadays are more interested in calling’s connection with an individual’s meaning at work or in life, and what kind of positive outcomes are brought by calling to an individual. Yet, little research was conducted to identify what elements in the organization context would empirically affect an individual’s sense of calling. In order to gain more empirical insights, this study takes police as the subject. Due to the particularity of the job content, which is considered to be high calling-demanding job so as to serve the public, it is important to understand how to enhance police’s sense of calling. Consequently, training and development and ethical climate, including egoism, benevolence and principle, are proposed to be the influential factors to police’s sense of calling in the police departments.
Data was collected from 37 police departments in Kaoshiung city, and regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis. The results show that training and development and principle climate is positively related to police’s sense of calling. Thus, the importance of this study builds on establishing empirical insights and applications on how to enhance police’s sense of calling in police departments.
