本研究旨在探討一個跨文化個案家庭成員在美國另類教育--夏威夷萬國大學(University of the Nations, Kona HI, USA)的學習體認和成效，以及二位兒子以在家自學的方式，從國中參與學校共學團，到高中以網路學校完成基礎教育，再接受萬國大學YWAM的門徒訓練（Discipleship Training School, 簡稱DTS）課程的學習過程與成效。
本研究採用質性研究法、個案研究法和事後回溯研究法，並透過視訊、當面訪談和以電子郵件用文字訪談個案家庭以收集資料，再使用內容主題分析，文件分析法和文獻探討等方法進行資料分析。本研究主要發現：（1）在二十一世紀知識經濟時代中，夏威夷萬國大學提供學生具備自主學習和解決問題能力必修的課程，（2）跨學科、混齡學習、重視家庭關係、培養品格等教學重點是萬國大學辦學特點，（3）跨洲校園，涵蓋七大領域（家庭、教育、經濟、宗教、政府、媒體、藝術）全方位的課程，是許多大學所欠缺，也正是引領個案家庭成員展現生命價值與意義的重要新亮點。本研究可以了解另類教育--夏威夷萬國大學在培養品格教育、學業、能力、服務和貢獻實施成效，以做為台灣家長在行使教育選擇權及教育有關單位在規劃及釐定教育政策之參考。

This study examines the experiences and achievements of a cross-cultural family in the process of learning in an alternative educational environment – at the University of the Nations (U of N), Kona HI, USA – with a focus on how the family’s two sons were home-schooled, first within a co-operative home school while of junior high school age, and secondly through home-based distance learning during the senior high school years, as well as on each child’s later participation in a U of N Discipleship Training School program.
Using qualitative research, a case study and ex post facto research, this study collects data through on-line video interviews, face-to-face interviews and e-mail correspondence with family members. It then uses content subject analysis, document analysis and a literature review to analyze the data. The study’s main findings are that: (1) the U of N offers required courses to students who have the ability to engage in self-regulated learning and resolve problems, (2) the U of N emphasizes cross-curricular learning mix, ed-age learning, character building , (3) the U of N has campuses on all six continents, with courses encompassing seven different domains: family, education, business, religion, government, media and the arts. While many universities lack these features, this family’s experiences with the U of N have given them a new understanding of the value and meaning of life. The study finds that through the learning process, each family member has understood that alternative education – as exemplified by the U of N – has played an important role in their character formation, learning, ability, service and contribution. This can serve as valuable reference to both Taiwanese parents as they make choices regarding their children’s education, and the relevant educational authorities as they plan and fine-tune educational policies.
