Abstract
This thesis is a qualitative research on caring in nursing in Taiwan. To explore the complex phenomenon of caring, this study takes into consideration different point of views. Twenty participants were interviewed, nurses as well as patients. The sample consist of ten Taiwanese nurses and ten patients. The patients were divided in two groups, five Taiwanese and five non-Taiwanese were interviewed.
To seek the answer to three research objectives the researcher conducted in depth semi-structured interviews. The first objective investigated the phenomenon of caring, the second one focused on emotional support and the last one examined transcultural experiences of nurses and patients in Taiwan. In a first part this thesis presents the most important aspect of caring according to nurses and patients. The second part of the findings point out how nurses provide emotional support and empathy in Taiwan and how this support is perceived by patients. In a last part, the difficulties that emerge from transcultural caring in Taiwan and some cultural differences are highlighted.
This study could help professionals working in the healthcare industry, such as nurses and doctors to excel in care giving, and may contain useful information for those who intend to work in Taiwan in the future. It could as well be of great importance to researchers interested in the phenomenon of care, emotional support, empathy and their manifestation in cross-cultural settings.
