Abstract
Recent notable cyberbullying incidents have called for a remedy to online violence. Currently, a way to control online violence is by pressing button to report toxic words to social network authorities. Although the toxic words can be then removed, the freedom and the pluralism of speech might be also minimized. Prior researches have suggested that the lack of empathy may lead to bullying; in addition, our one-year filed observation on Facebook also showed that empathy might reduce aggressive behaviors. An eye-tracking experiment, therefore, has been conducted to further investigate the benefits of empathy on reducing cyberbullying.
A group of 76 university students joined the experiments. The participants were asked to read real cases of cyberbullying on Facebook followed by unidentifiable online users’ comments. Participants were divided into two groups: one group was provided with empathic comments, while the other group was provided with toxic comments.
The behavior results show that the group provided empathy comments have lower hostility and aggressive intentions than the other group. Evidence also suggests that eye movement patterns are related to subsequent intention to like aggressive comments. Overall, the result demonstrates that promoting empathy is a possible mechanism to reduce cyberbullying social network.
