Abstract
This paper examines the current standing of “social entrepreneurship” in a search for consensus among academics. This article concentrates on the meanings given to social entrepreneurship from the perspective of business and management. A systematic approach using peer-reviewed journals from ABI/INFORM was used to obtain a representative sample from scholars over the last decade (2004 to March 2014) in an attempt to obtain empirical data from various business disciplines. Content analysis was then performed in order to evaluate the pivotal attributes, and to categorize them according to key factors, results were then applied to these factors. The article selection was limited to journals in the business and management fields using JCR rankings for business & finance journals, business journals, and management journals. Perspectives from other disciplines may not be represented. Additional multi-disciplinary research is needed to further refine the theory. It is our hope that this paper helps illuminate the dominant theories and future research requirements of social entrepreneurship to meet the current shortage of empirical studies regarding definitions of social entrepreneurship. In doing so I endeavour that this study will add to the discourse, and incite more research into a developing field.
