本論文為探討美國與台灣地區大學藝文中心之經營管理研究，過去對於大學藝文中心之研究並不多見，討論範圍亦多為定位與功能的探討，少有針對大學藝文中心全面管理之研究。本研究的目的有二：一、了解大學藝文中心之起源與運作狀況及面臨之困境。二、對大學藝文中心的未來發展與經營方向提出分析與建言。本研究採用個案研究法，收集資料的方法為訪談、文件分析與觀察法。理論架構以功能學派為主，根據Gelatt（1992）、Radbourne & Fraser（1996）、Byrnes（1999）、陳尚盈（Chen，2001）、Kreitner（2001）及Chong（2002）在企業管理、非營利組織管理與藝術管理等領域的論述，整理出十一項大學藝文中心可能運用到之管理技巧：計畫、決策制定與策略管理，組織管理，人力資源運用，領導與團隊合作，行銷與公共關係，募款，財務管理，設備管理，網際網路運用與資訊管理，藝術教育節目規劃，及義工制度等來檢視大學藝文中心之經營運作。
研究發現，美國地區大學藝文中心在成立時間上與台灣地區大學藝文中心一樣都是以視覺藝術為先，兩者在宗旨上都包含了社區服務，業務都是以規劃視覺與表演藝術為主，早期發展都面臨相似的問題。而在差異點方面，美國地區大學藝文中心的宗旨較多元與具特色，多為獨立運作之非營利機構，具有清楚的人員編制以及提供種類繁多的節目與藝術教育課程，擁有自己管理的表演場地，硬體規劃注重休閒功能，經費來源管道多元，募款積極，完善之義工制度以及與校內藝術科系整合良好等，都是台灣地區大學藝文中心可參考之處。
在分析美國經驗之後，研究者認為台灣地區大學藝文中心可以設置階段性計畫，發展切合該校條件與特色的定位與功能，人員擴充與專業背景的增強，與校內藝術科系合作並規劃藝術教育課程，發展贊助與會員制度，擴展網際網路功能，與校外藝術組織或他校大學藝文中心結盟合作，建立使用者付費觀念，並進行典藏計畫與建立評估機制。至於中山大學藝文中心籌備處還可朝固定經費來源，聯合其他大學藝文中心進行募款工作，與校內藝術科系進行密切合作以及和高雄市觀光資源整合，發展文化觀光。
長期以來台灣對藝文發展較不重視，即使在民國七十七年就設立了大學藝文中心，但其發展的腳步相當緩慢，許多大學藝文中心都是在「學中做、做中學」成長，所幸目前各大學已開始重視校園藝文環境，但大學藝文中心仍有許多待解決之問題。大學藝文中心能夠讓學生在學習學術之外，接受藝術文化之薰陶，培養學生健全的人格，藉由藝文中心在節目與活動的規劃及提供，達成藝文環境的改進、藝術教育的推廣與藝文人口的增加。本論文期盼透過對大學藝文中心經營管理的探討，提供大學藝文中心在運作上的參考，作為未來其他大學在經營藝文中心的建議。
