在物質生活日漸充裕的今日，對自然環境的需求度相對提高，進而使得自然生態的保育存續問題成為全球注目的焦點。生態旅遊(Ecotourism)是一種在旅遊中以自然環境為訴求，基於人與自然共存的原則，追求自然永續發展的生態保育活動。其不僅具有環境保護、生態保育等優點，更能達到教育環境倫理的功能。近年來各國皆強調生態旅遊的重要性，但由於對生態旅遊一詞並無明確的定論、遊客對其內涵的認知亦過於模糊，加上各國推動的組織還未成熟，因此在實行上的成效並不明顯；然而，在國際生態旅遊組織(The International Ecotourism Society, TIES)此一常設性的國際性組織的推動下，終於訂定了西元2002年為國際生態旅遊年（International Year of Ecotourism, IYE）。我國對生態旅遊的認識尚淺，且大多集中在對其意義的探究，反而偏廢了對生態旅遊本質的體認。本研究的目的便是為了瞭解遊客的心態及行為意向，進而使生態旅遊能夠更確實地落實在我國的旅遊活動中。
本研究擬以Fishbein & Azjen (1975)理性行為理論(the Theory of Reasoned Action, TRA)為基本架構，另外整合影響遊客生態旅遊行為的相關變數，態度(Attitude, AT)、主觀規範(Subjective Norm, SN)、行為意向(Behavior Intention, BI)與環境知識(Environmental Knowledge, EK)以及相關研究，提出「遊客生態旅遊行為模式」，探討影響遊客生態旅遊行為的關鍵因素。更針對300位到高雄市內「柴山」從事生態旅遊的遊客進行問卷調查，以結構方程式模型(Structural Equation Modeling, SEM)驗證此行為模式，並根據研究結果，提出提高遊客生態旅遊行為政策上的建議。
