Abstract
Tan Twan Eng’s The Gift of Rain and The Garden of Evening Mists encircle Philip Hutton and Teoh Yun Ling’s traumatic experience as well as the two protagonists’ lingering predicament between memory and forgetting against the backdrop of Japanese Occupation in Malaya. In this thesis, I attempt to elucidate the two novels on the basis of trauma and the later constitution of testimony so as to see how the final reconciliation of the traumatized is exhibited and interpreted. Chapter One examines how Philip’s identity’s in-betweenness in relation to the phenomena of culture-as-difference by adopting Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of cultural identity. From Philip’s first person point of view, the novel unravels the vital relation between one’s narrability and the constitution of his identity. On the basis of Cathy Caruth’s theory of trauma, Chapter Two scrutinizes the protagonist in The Garden of Evening Mists, Teoh Yun Ling’s unwittingly reliving of the past as well as her obsession with the promise. Apart from her depiction of the past events, the traumatic experience is also represented through the concrete inscription, the horimono, bringing the intertwining relationship between memory and forgetting and their mutual dependence to the fore. In Chapter Three, I would draw upon the particular feature that the two novels share—the demonstration of testimony. This chapter analyzes Philip and Yun Ling’s individual testimony respectively. By exploring the functionality of monumental constructions, we learn that their testimony can be extended to the collective testimony to the historical trauma.
