Abstract
This paper centers on two questions raised in Tash Aw’s second novel Map of the Invisible World: As a Malaysia diaspora, why does Aw write a story about Indonesia? Moreover, what and where is this invisible world and what does it imply? By looking into these questions, we will be able to learn what Aw regards as a homeland.
In order to answer these questions, I first borrow Benedict Anderson’s imagined communities to investigate the concepts of nation, nationality and nationalism. Following the first chapter, I move my focus from the nation to individual, adopting Gaston Bachelard’s theory of the house to define what a home is to the protagonist Adam. In the final chapter I use Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of newness to define Aw’s invisible world—the invisible world is the beyond that links the novel’s future with the present in the real world. With the intervention of the beyond to the now, Aw brings the everlasting identity issues from the range of a nation into a whole world, and is thus able to rewrite or redefine our past.
Writing the plight of Adam and Indonesia, Aw is in effect revealing his own anxiety about locating himself in the world. Through writing, Aw offers a revision of the history, which makes it possible for him and people in the modern world to find a homeland of their own.
