本研究主要分析高屏溪近岸海域沉積物中直鏈烷、多環芳香烴和重金屬。高屏溪是台灣流域面積最大的河川,其污染來源主要是來自家庭生活污水和畜牧廢水,流域內的工業廢水則經由大林蒲放流管排放進入海域中。東港溪則與高屏溪為同一個出海口,其污染源主要是畜牧廢水。在高屏溪河口有一狹長的峽谷,一般相信,由陸地上所輸出的大部份懸浮沉積物會傳輸到高屏峽谷中。
研究結果發現高屏溪近岸河口海域沉積物的總直鏈烷和總多環芳香烴分別為0.13~0.79(µg/g dry weight) 和0.03~0.195(µg/g dry weight)之間,來源可能以石油性污染來源的比例為多,而重金屬在高屏峽谷中有累積的現象。沉積物中有perylene的存在,顯示陸源性植物應佔有一定比例,且離岸越遠perylene含量愈低,亦是追蹤陸源性污染物傳輸分佈的指標之一。高雄港內的直鏈烷和多環芳香烴含量皆比本研究海域為高,高雄鄰近海域含量則與本研究相近。香港的維多利亞港直鏈烷和多環芳香烴污染程度較本研究海域高出10倍。與國際間訂定的沉積物標準值相較,僅acenaphthene和fluorene超過NOAA所制定的ERL。重金屬方面,Cr超過加拿大制定的最低影響程度且測站2-2與4-4的Ni含量已經超過NOAA所制定的ERM。
