Abstract
Abstract
Tan Twan Eng’s second novel The Garden of Evening Mists (2012) depicts the Japanese Occupation of Malaya during the Pacific War and the aftermath of it. The story is told through the first-person narration of the protagonist Teoh Yun Ling, who spends almost her whole life searching for the internment camp which she is once kept custody in. This thesis aims to discuss the politics of ruin and ruination in terms of space, body and history. It attempts to elucidate how the ruin is not merely rotting building materials but a process of becoming with fluid meaning. The first chapter revolves the spatial meaning of the ruin. The ruin is what Michel Foucault terms “heterotopia.” Ruined space and ruining space enables the interlocution between the past and the present. They further become the mirror reflecting each other. The second chapter tries to examine the physical ruination of the body in the novel. It discusses Yun Ling’s wartime experience in the internment camp and the politics of loss after the ruination of the body. Grievability reveals the possibility for mourning and melancholia. It concludes that Yun Ling’s physical illness is what makes the narrative possible. The third chapter delineates the ruination of history in the novel. The novel has its focus on the Malayan independence and the 1980s. Colonial and imperial history have become the ruin and is about to fade away. The chapter analyzes how the intragroup history and intergroup history are in the process of ruination. It juxtaposes Yun Ling’s narrative of personal history and the Japanese historian professor Tatsuji’s narrative and delineates how fractured narrative can preserve the voice of the victim. My thesis concludes that the novel is a process of reconstruction of the voice of the oppressed. The study of ruin and ruination is the study of the manipulation of fragments and remains.
