石黑一雄以複製人為主題書寫的小說《別讓我走》在其看似平凡的科幻小說外表之下，其實蘊藏了許多值得深入探討的人文關懷及倫理議題。自詡為國際作家的石黑一雄作品包羅萬象，每部均以不同時代、地理及文化背景作為主題。然而，這些多樣性的作品之共通點，在於作者對同理心(empathy)的反思及論述。本論文旨在探討石黑一雄如何透過獨特的故事背景設定與書寫風格，於《別讓我走》中呈現發人省思的複雜同理心議題。第一章將介紹英文同理心一詞之來源及其相關論述，並進一步探討同理心之限制與陰暗面，例如同理心之選擇性與排他性。第二章將引用德國心理學家詹池(Ernst Jentsch)所提出的「詭異」(the uncanny)理論，分析小說中人類對於複製人的恐懼及焦慮如何使其無法以平等、富同理心的健全心態對待之，以至於使用欺騙的方式，對複製人孩童提供短暫有限的照護，非但無法真正改變他們悲慘的命運、亦無法廢除整個社會對於複製人殘酷的活取器官體制。第三章將以羞恥為主題，討論小說中複製人對於自身所處之極權體制毫不反抗的背後原因。

Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, although ostensibly a normal science fiction about human cloning, is actually the writer’s petition for humanity and ethics. Being an international writer, almost each of Ishiguro’s novels has diverse backgrounds in terms of time, space and culture. However, the common ground which all these works share is the writer’s reflection and reiteration upon empathy. This thesis aims to discuss how Ishiguro presents a worth-pondering sense of problematic empathy trough his unique, unconventional setting and writing style. Chapter one introduces the etymological origin of the English word empathy including its related discourses and further elaborate the limitation and dark sides of empathy such as its selectiveness and exclusiveness. In chapter two, I adopt Ernst Jentsch’s theory of “the uncanny” to analyze how the human’s fear and anxiety keep them from treating the clones with equality and empathy that they only offer temporary shelter and care for the clone children by deceptive means and fail to change their tragic destiny and abolish the inhuman organ-harvesting system in the whole society. Chapter three will focus on the theme of shame and examine the reason for the clone’s submissiveness to the atrocious system they are in.
