Abstract
Abstract
Shanghai Cooperation Organization started its history with the Shanghai Five mechanism established in 1996, when China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed the Shanghai Treaty supporting them in consolidation and ratifying the borders between China and former Soviet countries.
As the six member states of SCO occupy three-fifths of the Eurasian continent and have a population of a quarter of the world's population, it is a significant organization even from the perspective of its scale, economic and military constituents of the member countries. In addition to the six member states, the SCO has six observer states and six dialogue partners. In terms of political integration and regional influence, the organization is considered to be a great power and has impressive opportunities to develop its cohesiveness in the future.
In the recent years, a lot of scholars observe different aspects of the SCO. Forums and seminars upon the directions, perspectives and challenges of the SCO are being organized with participation of representatives of the member countries, observer states and dialogue partners to analyze SCO’s performance in the world’s current political situation. Being originally a security profiled organization, the SCO is now actively developing other cooperation directions in Eurasia such as economy, trade, infrastructure and energy industry. Moreover, with the acceptance of the SCO’s success, the critical view on its activities also exists as scholars notice the difference in values and interests among member countries and see potential conflict between main leaders of the SCO China and Russia. Another attractive point for the researchers is SCO’s anti-American orientation which is also being argued as significant or not.
