Abstract
Fandango, a traditional Spanish dance, became popular in various regions of Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The features of fandangos at the time were guitar accompaniment, graceful gesture and gradually increasing speed at the end of each section. The joy and passion in fandango led itself one of the most representative dances in Spain.
Due to the colonization and domination of several nationalities, the culture of Spain developed into diversity and integration. In the fifteenth century, a large number of gypsies arrived in Andalusia, they blended Spanish music and dance at the time with gypsy turning into Flamenco. Fandango was one of the dances applied to Flamenco.
This research is divided into four parts. The first part contains the origin and development of Fandango, including performance style, dancing characteristic, and relationship to Flamenco. The second part is the analysis of Fandango music manuscripts in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. And the third part will explore Fandango on keyboard in the eighteenth century by analyzing works of two composers, Domenico Scarlatti and Antonio Soler. Finally, a short summary will end the thesis.
