本文探討在二十世紀中共產主義和自由主義間的交鋒，在當代社會運作基礎中主要有兩大核心，分別是資本主義與自然科學。自然科學被視為知識體系和方法論，資本主義被視為生產方式。
在十六世紀時出現了自由主義，自由主義保障財產權並導致資本主義的產生，而資本主義的生產方式壓迫了人類，而後共產主義興起並對之而批判，但共產主義的實際執行上也導致了專制和威權的產生，而本篇論文則把重點放在自由主義如何回應共產主義。
本文以《馬克思傳》的歷史唯物論，來探討柏林如何蒐集和整理馬克思相關文獻和材料，之後從精神哲學、青年黑格爾派、巴黎社會主義，循序漸進推論到歷史唯物論，以及之後的問題意識和影響。再從《自由論》的兩種自由概念探討歷史決定論的相關問題。同時從人類的解放和如何獲得自由的概念的問題進行探討，之後在以葛雷的多元主義作延伸。

The thesis aims to discuss the encounter between communism and liberalism in the twenty-first century. There are two cores in the operation of contemporary society: one is capitalism and the other is natural science. Natural science has been regarded as the epistemological system and the methodology, while capitalism has been thought as the modes of production.
With the emergence of liberalism in the sixteenth century, the property rights were guaranteed in the liberalism, and it led to the birth of capitalism. However, the mode of production in capitalism oppressed the humans, and then it followed with the emergence and critique of post-communism. But the actual operation of communism also brought about the birth of despotism and tyranny. And the emphasis to which the thesis would be devoted is the response of the communism toward liberalism.
The thesis begins with the historical materialism discussed in Isaiah Berlin’s Karl Marx: His Life and Environment, and discusses how he collected and organized the relevant literature and materials. Through the threads of psychoanalysis, Young Hegelians, Paris Socialism, and historical materialism, the thesis discusses his later problematics and impacts. Then from Berlin’s Liberty: Incorporating Four Essays on Liberty, the thesis explores the relevant problems of historical determinism. Meanwhile, the emancipation of the humans and how they obtain the liberty are further discussed. Last, John Gray’s Two Faces of Liberalism is further examined.
