本文旨在以時間性問題探討發生在影像藝術中的藝術體驗，研究動機始於龐畢度中心收藏之兩件錄像裝置作品：丹．葛蘭漢的《過往延續至今的當前》及布魯斯．諾曼的《繞行空間的角落》所形成的強烈感受震撼。以梅洛龐蒂的時間理論討論觀者─影像的時間性，以及德勒茲的影像理論討論實際影像─潛在影像的時間性，藉此展開作品從影像向外及向內等兩個向度，在兩者交互作用之下形成事件。
本文藉由三個層次的時間性：(1)身體時間性；(2)意識時間；(3)事件時間。以及三種間距：(1)空間的間距；(2)感覺的間距；(3)時間的間距，將藝術體驗展開至多種層次中進行討論。從梅洛龐蒂的時間理論指出前兩種時間性的運作，及其藉由塞尚的繪畫探討知覺作為藝術體驗的來源，使形成於繪畫中的前兩種間距在影像藝術中，與德勒茲之影像理論相對照之下發展出第三種間距，並且使時間性的問題從前兩個層次進入第三個層次。
