Abstract
Over the past few years globalization has affected learning and teaching English in Asia. The number of expatriate English teachers is growing rapidly in Taiwan and throughout East Asia. The purpose of this study is to examine challenges both expatriate and local English teachers face and the ways they deal with the challenges. The findings reveal that some participants have experienced racial discrimination. The challenges include: regulations and wages, culture differences, language barrier and communication problems. The study also discovered that violations of psychological contract is not a common practice in ESL settings. Additionally, a link between stereotyping and discrimination has been found. Based on the results, the study provides a few solutions and recommendations.
