1973年金德伯格（Charles Kindleberger, 1910-2003）提出霸權穩定論，成為國際政治經濟學的代表性理論之一，後來多位學者在其基礎上持續的討論發展。然而，本文認為學界大多只侷限在霸權穩定論的表面論述，而忽略了金德伯格整個的學術思想內涵。大致來說，金氏的霸權穩定論有兩個特點：首先，其學術研究根源為歷史經濟學，此蘊藏著比較分析與歷史研究方法，與他如何論證出霸權論述息息相關。其次，金氏的研究問題領域聚焦在國際金融議題，關注在霸權國如何維繫金融體系的創造與穩定。總之，金氏的霸權論述與之後國際關係學者對該理論的詮釋或是關於問題領域的設定皆是不同的。因此，本文將歸納其國際政治經濟學的思想特色，進而重新理解金德伯格的霸權穩定論。
