Abstract
The Formosa Ridge belongs to the gas hydrate-bearing area which is located in the southwestern Taiwan. The deep-sea mussels inhabit around the areas and form cold seep ecosystem. In this study, the population and reproductive biology of cold seep mussels were investigated which were collected from 3 sites (39-2, 42-2 and 50-1) by the German research vessel RV SONNE from Formosa Ridge, The experiments were divided into three parts: (1) species identification by CO1 gene; (2) comparisons of morphological characters among sites and with/without parasitic polychaetes; (3) comparisons of the development of gonad among sites and with/without parasitic polychaetes. The cold seep mussels were Bathymodiolus platifrons in majority. In addition, undescribed species, i.e., Sissano Bathymodiolus sp. 1 was also found. The genetic relationships of cold seep mussel B. platifrons in Formosa Ridge were similar to the population of Sagami Bay, Japan. The length-frequency data indicated significantly larger mussels at site 50-1 than those of 39-2 and 42-2 (p<0.05). Standardized shell height and shell width of mussels were no significant difference among sites, and standardized tissue wet weight and tissue dry weight indicated significantly larger at site 50-1 than those of 39-2 and 42-2 (p<0.05). The mussel B. platifrons had parasitic polychaete Branchipolynoe pettibonae, the infestation rate was 41.96%. The morphological characters of tissue wet weight, tissue dry weight, tissue condition index, shell volume and gonad somatic index were significantly larger at site 50-1 than those of others (p<0.05). The male mussel B. platifrons was characterized with 7 reproductive stages, and the females had 6 stages. The pattern of gametogenesis in B. platifrons from Formosa Ridge showed no reproductive peak, and no significant difference among sites. The mussel B. platifrons may reproduce year round. And, the effects of parasitic polychaete on the reproductive development of mussels were insignificant.
